Knowing which domain name extensions to register can be a frustration for many clients. Many of the clients that first engage us to manage their portfolios are more familiar with the generic extensions such as the .com .net .org and .info and it is no surprise that these are in the top 10 as they are international extensions and have no restrictions for registration.

The real benefit most clients find, is our wealth of experience with regards to the hundreds of country specific extensions, each with their own rules, regulations and peculiarities. I wanted to take the opportunity to share some insights into one of the country codes (ccTLDs).

.de Germany

This is the largest country code in the world, having the highest number of registrations. Interestingly it is one of the few extensions that has only one extension within the ccTLD. If is already registered then you cannot choose an alternative extension.

The registration restrictions are very easy for people to get around and it poses a ‘high risk’ for a third party registration. Whilst the majority of ccTLDs have specific domain name dispute proceedings for trademark owners to take action regarding an abusive registration, there is no arbitration centre in Germany. It is possible to block a domain name via a DENIC complaint. A German court has to deal with the litigation. The DENIC hold will only be in place whilst litigation is in place.
