.XXX – What’s all the fuss about?

.XXX - lets be Adult about it!

The press has been littered over the last few years – and much more recently – with articles surrounding the .XXX domain extension launch this year. There are many mixed opinions on the subject, and everybody wants their say, from National Governments to the .XXX registry, ICM to the Free Speech Coalition. But what do you think about this movement, often named the “virtual red light district”?

To give you an idea of what the introduction of .XXX means, read on to find out why you should pay attention to .XXX…

So what is .XXX and why are the views so mixed?
Wikipedia rather formally describes it as “a tool for dealing with the conflict between those who wish to provide and access adult material through the Internet, and those who wish to prevent access to it, either by children and adolescents, or by employees at their workplaces.”
While the intention of the .XXX domain was to clean up the internet and provide a safe and secure area for adult content this, has brought about its own constraints and mixed opinions.

Some argue that the marginalization of adult content will result in aggressive policing, banning and oppression; the Obama administration and some foreign nations say the domain’s offensive material will encourage oppressive regimes to block .XXX entirely.

Others argue a more positive viewpoint for the new domains. Peter Dengate Thrush, ICANN board chairman, argues this as a positive change, saying that “It will be easier for people to filter it.” Moreover, a deal with McAfee promises that “every .XXX domain will be scanned for vulnerabilities such as SQL injection, browser exploits and phishing sites, reputational analysis and malware”. Whether you like .XXX or not, you have to admit that this is a rare example of “innovation” from a domain registry and is a big selling point.

Furthermore, many adultnames.com owners may want to buy the .XXX versions, just to avoid the typosquatting issues; which is one of the reasons why last year’s launch of .CO was so successful.

Another concern is how non-adult brands can protect their trademark in .XXX, but during the second period of domain release, known as Sunrise B, non-adult trademark owners can pay a one-time fee to have their brand essentially turned off in .XXX
