You have to give it to Google, they’ve applied for .lol and it has to be one of the best names in ICANN’s application round for new Global Top level Domains.  We’ve been through Google’s application form and extracted some interesting reading for you …

“18.a. Mission⁄Purpose of the Proposed gTLD
The proposed gTLD will provide the marketplace with direct association to the term, ʺlol,ʺ a colloquial abbreviation of the phrase ʺlaugh out loud.ʺ  The mission of this gTLD, .lol, is to provide a dedicated domain space in which registrants can enact second-level domains that provide or relate to funny, comedic content.  Charleston Road Registry believes that registrants will find value in associating with this gTLD, which could have a vast array of purposes for businesses, organizations or individuals seeking to reach a market of individuals who are interested in funny content.  This assertion is supported by industry data: ʺlolʺ is one of the top queries on YouTube, along with ʺmake me laughʺ and ʺfunny videosʺ.
